Sankalp (संकल्प) means a solemn vow, spiritual resolution, or firm intention. In the spiritual tradition of Sanatan Dharma, a Sankalp is more than a mental wish — it is a sacred commitment made by the soul to fulfill a goal, purpose, or spiritual duty with full devotion and purity.
“Yatha sankalpam tathā siddhiḥ” – “As is the intention, so is the success.”
Sankalp is the foundation of all spiritual practices. Before performing any Yagya, Puja, or Tapasya, the devotee takes a Sankalp — a clear, verbal declaration of purpose, time, and intention.
It connects the mind (Manas), the soul (Atma), and the divine will.
In Vedic rituals, Sankalp defines the purpose of the offering
In Yoga, it acts as a mental resolve to stay focused
In modern life, Sankalp helps set clear goals with commitment
A Sankalp could be:
“I will meditate daily for 10 minutes.”
“I vow to speak truthfully.”
“I will serve others without ego.”
